What GSTC Certification Covers
The GSTC Hotel Sustainability Certification provides a globally recognized framework to verify these efforts. It evaluates a property across four key pillars to ensure comprehensive accountability:
- Effective Sustainability Management: This focuses on the "behind-the-scenes" operations, including robust management systems, corporate policies, and compliance with all legal and health and safety requirements.
- Socio-Economic Impacts: The standards look for a commitment to the local community. This includes prioritizing local employment, fair wages for all staff, ethical sourcing of goods, and active engagement with community development.
- Cultural Heritage Protection: This ensures the property respects and promotes local culture and traditions. It covers the protection of historical sites, the ethical use of cultural imagery, and the encouragement of responsible tourism practices that honour local heritage.
- Environmental Stewardship: This pillar targets the physical footprint of the stay. It includes strict management of energy, water, waste, and chemicals, alongside dedicated efforts to protect biodiversity and preserve the natural ecosystems surrounding the property.
